Centrelink Carers Supplement 2024, Eligibility Criteria, Benefits The Australian Government provides financial support to carers who are caring for someone who needs help and companionship to carry out their daily activities through the annual Carer Supplement. According to reports, around 300,000 Australians receive carer payments, allowances and other benefits. In the 2024-25 Budget, the Australian Government has mentioned providing $18.6 million to carers over the next five years to provide financial support to carers and structure their work commitments to make their lives easier. This year, the Government announced the Carer Supplement for eligible carers.
The Eligible carers should have received their annual Centrelink Carer Supplement of up to $600 in their account by 02 August 2024. Now, carers must be thinking about their 2025 Centrelink Carer Supplement. Carers who meet the eligibility requirement can expect the Australian Government to announce the Carer Supplement in July 2025.
Centrelink Carers Supplement Eligibility Criteria 2024
- Carer Payment is a Centrelink payment for someone who cannot work because they are providing ongoing care and supervision.
- Carer Payment is an ‘income support payment’ – like Job Seeker Payment, Youth Allowance, Parenting Payment, Disability Support Payment and Age Pension. You cannot receive Carer Payment if you are already receiving another income support payment.
- The person being cared for must have a high care need, and must have needed care for at least 6 months.
- The person’s need for care must be significant, requiring more than help with household tasks such as eating, dressing and bathing. Care can involve someone living with them to help them with things they find difficult, such as making sure they don’t fall or making sure they take their medicines.
- Care must be provided for ‘a significant period’ on most days, equivalent to at least one normal working day, while that care can be split up into 24-hour periods. You will not receive Carer Payment if you work or study more than 25 hours/week.
- Care must be provided in the home of the person who needs care.
- To receive Carer Payment you must have income and assets within the limits set out in the income test and the assets test. Sometimes the person you are caring for must also have income and assets within the limits set out in different income and assets tests.
- You can claim Carer Payment by phone, in person or online. You may also need to fill in other forms.
Centrelink Carers Supplement Benefits 2024
- The Carer Supplement is a $600/year payment automatically paid to people who receive Carer Payment or Carer’s Allowance.
- The Child Disability Help Payment is a $1000/year payment that can be paid to a person receiving Carer’s Allowance to support the cost of caring for a disabled child under the age of 16.
