The New South Wales State Government has launched the Minimum Income Household Rebate as a scheme to provide financial relief from immediate expenses to households facing the pressures of daily life in New South Wales. The Minimum Income Household Rebate was designed as a financial assistance scheme with the primary aim of easing the burden on a household associated with the ever-increasing energy prices, particularly for the most vulnerable people. The Minimum Income Household Rebate provides some financial relief to eligible households by providing a rebate of $350 annually for retail customers and $385 annually for embedded customers such as retirement villages or residential communities. This rebate is credited directly onto the electricity bill, reducing the overall cost of energy for eligible households.
Eligibility Criteria for the NSW Low-Income Household Rebate
- The applicant must be a permanent resident of New South Wales.
- The applicant must have an electricity supply bill in his or her name.
- The applicant must have one of the following currently valid concession cards:
-Pensioner Concession Card – from Services Australia or DVA
-Healthcare Card – from Services Australia
-DVA Gold Card – stamped with one of the following: “War Widow,” “Totally and Permanently Disabled” (TPI), or “Disability Pension” (EDA).
Application for the NSW Low-Income Household Rebate
- Retail customers: To be eligible for this rebate, you will need to contact your electricity retailer directly for instructions on how to apply. The retailer will guide you through their specific process.
- On-supply customers: You can visit the Service NSW website and apply online for the Minimum Income Household Rebate.
- Go to the Minimum Income Household Rebate Apply page. Fill in your name, address, contact information and other requested personal information.
- If required, upload your concession card and any other supporting documents.
- Double check all the information you fill in on your application before submitting it online.
- You must know your concession card number.
- Include your electricity account number and details when applying.
- Service NSW will then confirm your eligibility and process your application upon receipt.
- You will receive an email with the status of your application, telling you whether you are eligible to receive the rebate.
- The rebate amount will be credited to your electricity account or as a direct payment, depending on your type of electricity supply.
NSW Low-Income Household Rebate Amount
- Eligible applicants must have a regular account with any retail electricity provider. The rebate is $285 per year, tax-free.
- The rebate goes directly into the account of the customer who is paying the electricity bill, providing immediate financial relief to the customer.
- Eligible long-term residents living in residential communities – caravan and mobile home parks and retirement villages – who receive their electricity bill from their community operator receive $258.50 each year.
- These people will still be entitled to the rebate even though they may be part of an embedded network through which electricity is supplied and billed through the community operator.
Recent Changes in the NSW Low-Income Household Rebate
- Higher rebate amount: The low-income household rebate has increased from $285 to $350 per household, per financial year, from 1 July 2024.
